Where parents are identified with a learning difficulty/disability, the centre benefits from a close liaison with The Learning Disabilities Team, Benton House, which specialises in working with such parents.
The centre uses a range of methods to gather information, The Sue McGaw et al Manual supports the assessment, including question sheets, individualised to focus on the main areas of concern, pictorial sheets for identifying areas of risk both from within the home and within the community, and selected formats from the above mentioned Parents Assessment Manual*. Lead Assessment Workers also engage in discussions with the parents throughout the assessment to gain information and to assist the parents in their parenting ability.
We have established links with community resources that enchance the work we do. We have excellent links with local Health visitors, Northern Learning Trust, and WEYES programmes on Sexual Health, Mental Health, Yoga and Healthy Eating. We run a 12 week Parenting skills course, and access the Freedom Programme and Shared Beginnings.
